Many have asked the same question lately : How solar power works ?  How do we get solar power?

Solar electricity is produced using solar panels  each made from a number of solar cells. Some of the light particles (photons) are soaked up by each solar cell as sunlight hits it. Every light particle contains a bit of energy which, when absorbed, frees an electron in the cell. As the light particle is absorbed, electric wiring on either side of the solar cell allow a flow of current. The electricity can then either be used immediately for lighting or appliances, or it can be stored within a battery.

Solar cells, when joined together, are called solar panels. Because the electricity produced by a single solar cell is not sufficient for most purposes, solar cells are joined to form solar panels. The most common solar panels (there are various type and sizes) consist of silicon solar cells and generate a maximum of 50 Watts of solar electricity. Panels are available in a variety of sizes. Solar panels can also be interconnected to generate more energy.

The photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity, but that’s not the only way of making solar energy. You can also get solar-thermal panels which heat water instead of creating electricity. Solar-thermal panels and PV panels work in very different ways, and solar-thermal panels don’t involve electricity at all. Although they look similar to solar panels, instead of light particles being absorbed into solar cells, solar thermal panels have black glass which soaks up the sun’s heat. Water is heated as it trickles through the panels, after which it is channeled into the home water system.

It’s incredible to think that the power transmitted by the sun in just one hour, is more than the entire world uses in a year. You can make use of passive solar energy by designing or redesigning your home to maximize the power of sunlight and heat. Adding another south-facing window or increasing the insulation in your roof means you can capture the sun’s heat, and it will last longer. Any passive adjustments like these would be installed either when the house is initially built, or during major renovation. Adding a collector like a solar panel, would be referred to as  active solar power.

Solar panels do not require continuous sunlight to work, as many people believe; they will still work even on cloudy days. There are two possibilities for after dark energy supply. You can draw your electricity from the grid at night if you remain connected to it. You can then use these after dark to run your lighting and other electric goods.
